Family Search enthusiast Donna Foster will be available Mondays from 1:30-2:30 and Thursdays 10:30-11:30 starting March 13th for anyone interested in learning how to search out family history. Please call the library at 605-422-2366 to reserve a spot.
Donna has had 50 years of experience researching her own history. When she began she found herself physically going to county seats and churches to obtain information. Churches were a great resource with records of baptisms, marriages and deaths. At the county seat you were only allowed to take a pencil in with you. Copies weren’t much of an option due to the cost. She says today’s search journey is so much easier. You can search other countries at all hours of the day at home in your pajamas if you wanted.
Her advice to us is to ask questions while you have the chance. Ask your grandparents how they met or what they liked to do when they were your age or experiences or challenges that made them stronger. Don’t know what to ask? She has a list of suggestions she can share with you.
She says when searching to expect the unexpected. It’s common for families to keep “family secrets”. Much can be learned or revealed as we search our history.
